Grown on thorny bushes (brambles), the blackberry is one of the largest of the wild berries. Oblong in shape, they can grow up to one inch long. Blackberries grow throughout the United States. [www.QinSen.com]

Look for berries that are plump with full color and a bright, clean, fresh appearance. Overripe berries are soft and sometimes moldy or leaky. Berries with caps attached may be immature. [www.QinSen.com]

Transfer to a glass or tupper-type container. Refrigerate and use within a day or two; blackberries are very perishable. [www.QinSen.com]

Uses & Preparation:

Berries don't ripen after picking. They do deteriorate quickly; plan to use them within a day or two after purchase.
Just before using, place berries in a colander and rinse with a gentle stream of cool water. Gently pat dry with paper towel.
Puree as a dessert sauce.
Top with fresh cream or yogurt.
Sprinkle over waffles or pancakes.
Makes blackberry pie.
Toss with greens or in fruit salads.
Make jams and jellies.
Availability:
June through September is peak; also available November through April.
